"Why Isn't President Bush
Choosing Pro-Life Nominees For Key
Cabinet Positions?"

George W. Bush has been the best friend the Christian Pro-Life movement has ever had in the White House.  During his first term he signed the ban on partial birth abortion and Attorney General John Ashcroft was a warrior in defense of the unborn.

With his new term about to begin there will be a different cast of characters in Washington and they are causing concern among many in the Pro-Christian, Pro-Life community, including us.

Senate Judiciary Chairman

First, the White House supported Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) for the Chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Sen. Specter will hold the reins for all judicial nominations for at least the next two years and that may include several Supreme Court nominations.  Sen. Specter is an unabashed supporter of abortion and created a firestorm recently with comments that were widely interpreted as a warning to President Bush to not send any Pro-Life judges to him for consideration.

The senator survived in large part because the White House gave him their support.  While we understand the politics involved here, this support by President Bush was troubling.  The person in this position needs to do more than ensure an up or down vote by the Senate, he needs the strength of conviction that allows him to be an all out advocate for the President's nominees.  It is very difficult to see that advocacy coming from Senator Specter.

Attorney General of the United States

Next President Bush nominated Alberto Gonzales to be the next Attorney General.  While on the Texas State Supreme Court, Judge Gonzales wrote the majority decision which overturned the state law requiring parental notification before a minor child could have an abortion.

We oppose judicial activism on any level.  When judges overturn laws passed by a majority of the people's elected representatives, particularly those that involve the protection of the family and the unborn, it is deeply distressing.

We understand that President Bush wanted to reward a long time friend for his years of loyalty by nominating him for this prestigious position, but feel there were much better Pro-Christian and Pro-Life candidates available.

As the nation's chief law enforcement officer, Judge Gonzales will be responsible for determining priorities regarding enforcement of our nation's laws.  He literally has the option of being on the front lines supporting life, as his predecessor John Ashcroft was, or not.  Surely there were men of equal or greater qualification, and strong Pro-Life convictions that could have received this nomination.  On the bright side, this nomination will likely end any talk of putting Judge Gonzales on the nation's Supreme Court.

Despite the fact that this appointment erodes support for Life, the nomination battle is still coming down to a partisan political fight.  Some ‘Christian' political organizations are looking the other way on Judge Gonzales' anti-Life record in order to toe the Republican political line.  Supporting Life is one of our greatest obligations as Christians, and it must remain front and center in our politics.

Secretary of State

Finally, President Bush has nominated Condoleezza Rice to be the next Secretary of State.  In this position she will be the face and the voice for the American people abroad.  In a 1999 Interview in the San Francisco Chronicle she described herself as "a pro-choice evangelical."  Since joining the Bush administration we have not been able to locate any public comments she has made regarding the protection of life.

The taking of unborn life is rife across the globe.  Even the UN has recently been making direct recommendations to specific countries encouraging more abortions.  It is essential for the Secretary of State to represent our values abroad.  If the UN is speaking up for the abortion murders, who is speaking up for Life?  Here again, President Bush had a rare opportunity to appoint someone who could give voice to this issue in an unprecedented way worldwide, yet chose a pro-choice candidate instead.

These three positions are among the most important our nation has to protect Life.  The Senate Judiciary Chairman directly controls the fate of judicial nominations.  The Attorney General chooses the laws which will receive priority enforcement.  The Secretary of State is the voice for our values around the world.  It is likely that in the coming months each of these positions will be held by an individual that is pro-choice.

Is President Bush forgetting the important priority of supporting Life as he assembles his new administration?  We must not allow this to happen!  Many more positions are open and will be opening up within the administration as the President's second term takes shape.  Please help us to remind the President to make the support of Life a priority as he makes these appointments.  We urge you to sign our "Open Letter to the President."
