“Pro-Abstinence Stories
FINALLY Getting Some Ink!

You are Already Having an Impact!

It never ceases to amaze me how incredible you are.  Each week we take Pro-Christian action on real items that affect people's lives.  Whether it is a school board, congressman, or state attorney general that changes their stripes; it is people like you that make it happen week in and week out.  Thank you so much for your caring!

This week your efforts to get the truth out about the phenomenal success of abstinence only sex education are already seeing results.  Frankly, when we started this campaign late last week, we thought it would take longer… but one MAJOR member of the media has already risen to the call and started to question some of the pro-abortion cheerleading that has been going on by other news writers and columnists.

The Wall Street Journal Wades In

Who's Misleading Whom?--II
"Columnist Ellen Goodman unwittingly points to yet another error in a Democratic congressman's critique of "abstinence only" sex-education programs:

A study released by US Representative Henry Waxman's office shows that nearly all the most popular programs contain lessons that are to science what propaganda is to politics. One text mistakenly says that men and women each contribute 24 chromosomes to their offspring, instead of 23. (Maybe our tax dollars have paid for the extra chromosome.) Another suggests that cervical cancer is a result of premarital sex.

Waxman and Goodman are right about the chromosome count, though it's hard to see what effect they expect this misinformation to have on sexual behavior. But as for cervical cancer, the American Cancer Society Web site reports that 'you can prevent most precancers of the cervix by avoiding exposure to the HPV'--the human papilloma virus, which is sexually transmitted:

Delaying having sexual intercourse if you are young can help you avoid HPV infection. Limiting your number of sexual partners and avoiding sex with people who have had many other sexual partners lower your risk of exposure to HPV. . . . Be aware that condoms ("rubbers") cannot protect against HPV.

...if the critics want to allege that they [abstinence programs] are 'misleading,' they ought to be rigorous about the facts themselves."

The Battle For Truth In Reporting Switches To The Local Media

As always happens shortly after a story hits the national press it is parroted in the local media.  As this is being written, newspapers from Portland, Maine to Phoenix, Arizona are going to press with articles trumpeting Waxman's report.  It is very important that, in addition to signing our petition on this issue, you also contact your local media and make sure they know the truth.

Ironically, it is often the small town newspapers that actually report accurately on issues like this.  Yesterday the Fredericksburg (VA) Freelance Star became one of many, running a story entitled, “The Waxman goofeth”.  You can make a difference on this issue.  Here is some information to provide the media with when you talk to them:

  • The Centers for Disease Control's Youth Risk Behavior Survey showed a decrease in the number of teens who were sexually active from 1991 (54%) to 2003 (47%).
  • The National Center for Health Statistics reports that fewer teens are having premarital sex. The report shows that dramatic gains have been made for both male and female teens, and that about half of teens are virgins.
  • Ninety-two percent of teens say they should be given a strong message from society about abstinence
  • The majority of sexually experienced teens regret being sexually active.
  • There are currently 10 studies, four of which were published in peer-reviewed journals, showing the effectiveness of abstinence education in reducing teen sexual activity.
  • An April 2003 study published in Adolescent and Family Health found that increased abstinence accounted for 67 percent of the decline in the pregnancy rate for teen girls ages 15 to 19.
  • An August 2004 study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health attributes 53 percent of the decline in pregnancy rates for 15-17 year olds to decreased sexual activity, which was larger than the decline attributed to contraceptive use.
