Salvation Army "Targeted"
Please Forward!

  • Has the CEO of Target Stores suddenly turned into the "Grinch?"
  • Has one of the nation's largest retailers decided that offending millions of Christians during the Christmas shopping season is a good marketing plan?

What could possibly explain the bizarre decision by Target Stores to ban the Salvation Army from setting up their red kettles in front of Target Stores this Christmas season?

The Salvation Army is one of the oldest and possibly the least controversial of all the charities in America. Their selfless good works and bell ringers have been a holiday tradition for over a hundred years.

This ban by Target Stores, according to the Atlanta Constitution Journal, will cost poor people in the Atlanta area alone over $240,000 in much needed services. "Locally, the money raised helps provide toys for about 11,000 children in the metro Atlanta area. It also funds Christmas dinner for about 4,000 families and helps provide gifts to the elderly, veterans, and others."

Let CEO Robert Ulrich and Target Stores know how strongly you disapprove of this anti-Christian position.  Especially during this time of year!

Around the country the Salvation Army is scrambling to find new locations for their kettles and bell ringers but they estimate they well lose over $9 million dollars in donations this year because of the Target Stores ban. That's a full 10% of all Salvation Army donations during Christmas!

"You don't just ignore the loss of $9 million,'' said Major George Hood, the Salvation Army's national community relations secretary, who's also concerned about the reduced visibility. "The red kettle with the bell ringer has become a Christmas icon.''

All While Target's CEO Takes A $31.8 MILLION
Christmas Present This Year

Target CEO Robert Ulrich added further fuel to the fire by taking a bonus of $31.8 million dollars from his personal stock options just days before the announcement.

"This is the largest stock option profit Ulrich has made so far. He received almost $17 million from the sale of options in the company's fiscal 2003, $12.2 million in 2002 and $10 million in 2000." -- The Business Journal

Ulrich has received over $70 Million dollars in additional income over and above his salary in the past 4 years! That is almost twice as much as the Salvation Army collected in front of Target Stores during the same time period. While we strongly support capitalism and free markets, CEO Robert Ulrich should be a bit embarrassed by receiving so much while thumbing his nose at the poor in the markets where he has stores.

Ironically in the Minneapolis area where Target has its headquarters roughly 33% of the area's donations came from kettles outside Target stores last year.

In the mean time, have a chat with your local store manager explaining why you'll be taking your business elsewhere this year.
